I’ve known Martijn for quite some time. We grew up together in a region of the Netherlands called “the Betuwe”, for instance. We went to the same high school and, as teenagers, went to the same club that your parents weren’t supposed to know you were attending. We also work together sometimes. (Martijn is a famous copywriter) And recently I thought: he has such a distinctive face and always speaks his mind on LinkedIn. Let me ask if I can photograph him.
After his ‘YES!’, I immediately started thinking. While he dances a lot on LinkedIn, I actually wanted him in a seated position. I bought a wooden chair and a small table at a thrift store. He had brought along several outfits, but what really stood out were his black cap, silver necklace with a turquoise stone, and black jacket with a brooch featuring the same turquoise. He had received the cap and necklace from his father-in-law. The brooch and jacket from his father. Both of whom had passed away within six months. We both wanted to capture that story visually.
It was a matter of finding the right balance, composition, posture, and light. In the finishing process, I wanted to highlight the stone in the necklace and brooch a bit more and add some extra accents. I believe that love for your craft can bring about many beautiful things, and I am very happy with the result. You can check Martijn’s website here: https://copycommando.nl/
